John Grahame Whateley

John Grahame Whateley, aged 71, is Chairman of the Cedar Group of companies and beneficiary of several trusts which have net assets of £45M, which he started over 40 years ago.  He has been in the property industry for approximately 49 years, after qualifying as a surveyor. He founded Castlemore Securities Limited 42 years ago, which held net assets in excess of £220M before the recent downturn in the property market.

Grahame is an FSA approved person and has a number of non-executive directorships, including:

  • Chairman of the Local Shopping REIT Plc, a company which he floated on the main market. It was the first REIT to obtain a full listing on the main market, and has a current market capitalisation of £65M.
  • Until recently a non-executive director of Arden Partners Plc, a London, Birmingham and Bristol based stockbroking business which was listed on AIM in July 2006. Grahame provided the venture capital funding and was Chairman of Arden from its commencement in 2002 until its flotation, and it has a current market capitalisation of £22M.  Arden Partners has been responsible for floating over 10 Indian energy businesses which currently have a market capitalisation of over £8BN.  Grahame is a substantial shareholder in 3 of these companies.
  • Non-executive Chairman of Castle Marinas which is owned and operates 2000 berths throughout Great Britain, on 9 inland and coastal marina sites and has a market value in excess of £45M.

Married to Diana for 40 years, the couple have three children. They have family homes in Worcestershire, The French Alps and Majorca.

In his leisure time, Grahame enjoys skiing and rugby, but he is never off-duty for long, even when abroad. A self-confessed workaholic, he takes his office with him wherever he travels and prides himself on working seven days a week.

In addition to Cedar’s charitable contributions, Grahame has taken a particular interest in the Duke of Edinburgh Outward Bound scheme, and is also a supporter of Terry Waite’s charity Emmaus which helps rehouse the homeless. In further addition Grahame and Diana support the charity Help for Heroes and are also strong supporters of cancer charities.

Grahame is also a keen supporter of Shellford Rangers in Halesowen, a local boys’ youth football team, providing new kit for the entire squad.

Both Grahame and Diana are keen racehorse owners and have had recent successes, notably with their horses Menorah and Tornado Bob.
